A Fresh Perspective on Offshoring Success

James, we're thrilled to have you on board! What motivated you to join our mission at Peoplegig?

Joining forces with people gig was an easy decision for me. Since starting #Breathe seven years ago I’ve personally explored countless methods to optimise our business operations. Having built a distributed team, I was always looking for ways to increase productivity and output, foster a positive culture, whilst at the same time reducing cost. I’ve felt first-hand the pain of fumbling through that alone and the impact it can have financially, while you test out different solutions and processes.

With that tangible value proposition, I’m really excited to be able to help clients look more holistically at their entire workforce. I’m always looking for new ways to help clients achieve their business objectives and this partnership will perfectly compliment our existing capabilities.  Alongside our Executive Search, and Multi-Hire programs we will now be able to help our clients Design, Build and Manage engaged, productive and commercially efficient teams.

For me, it’s also about being part of something with a clear “why”. Peoplegig founders and I share many values. Their passion to help companies hire ethically and truly champion a sometimes unappreciated but talented workforce is something that spoke to me. I feel like we have a real opportunity to create something special, that has a lasting positive impact.

With such a rich background, what do you bring to the table as the new Director at Peoplegig?

I've been living and working in Asia now for around 15 years and I’ll be here for good. Singapore has a reputation for being quite transient with many people passing through for a short period within their career before they move on. This sometimes leads to fragmented and more transactional business relationships. I don’t fall into that camp.

My knowledge of the Asia market and my trusted client base will allow Peoplegig access to clients within the region looking for a more global and complete solution. I'll be working to guide the business on their Asia expansion, giving real time and on the ground insights from my network and helping them customise and deliver the solution.
After operating as a lone founder and building a business from scratch, it’s exciting to be able to bring those learnings and that experience with me and now collaborate with the leadership team at Peoplegig to build something special together.

How do you see the future of talent acquisition and business solutions?

Who knows! Over the last few years, we’ve gone through a global pandemic, an economic downturn, an AI revolution and the rise of a multi-generational workforce. It’s hard to know exactly what’s coming and if anyone says they do, they’d be lying.
What I do see however, is that Employees now have a greater diversity of needs, more expectations on flexibility and more of a desire for purpose or a mission they can get behind.

For businesses, this means they are going to have to somehow align with all of this, whilst at the same time keeping a ruthless focus on productivity and profitability. The only way to do this is to develop a global and engaged workforce, build robust processes and strong systems, and offer exceptional and continuous training and upskilling. And that’s just to compete. Ultimately, it’s going to be businesses that move the fastest, that are the most adaptable and most open to embracing change that will succeed.

Lastly, how do you define a strategic offshoring solution?

I feel that the concept of offshoring is still a bit misunderstood by some people. Many clients I speak to today still believe that to “offshore”, either your business must reach a certain critical mass, you must accept a lower quality of work, or a difference in team culture needs to be accepted.

For me, strategic offshoring is simply about designing a workforce that is as efficient, effective, and engaged as possible. It’s about being proactive and designing the workforce with a global lens from day one rather than delaying that process until you are forced to. Most companies fail to do this.

A true strategic partner or solution will consult and educate and work with you in a way that is structured, mitigates risk, and ensures success. They’ll help you see the inefficiencies or operational risks and design a long term and sustainable solution and then help you manage it. Your success should be intertwined.
